Where I live, just near Byron Bay on the far east coast of Australia, we grow a lot of gourmet, boutique coffee.

Some of it has actually won prizes on a world scale and anyone here who loves coffee has their fav coffee shop on the beach (see the picture of mine on Shelly Beach Ballina) and of course a coffee grinder for the local brew.

Getting it right with gifts baskets for kids
When you are thinking about buying or making gift baskets for kids, there are several things to consider if you are going to hit the jackpot and be appreciated for your kind gesture.

First you need to think about whether the gift basket is for a group of children or one child, with all the ramifications of how much of what to put into the basket if it is to be shared.

Secondly, the gender of the child or children concerned. Sex role stereotypes aside, males and females really do have different interests and you need to consider this when making or buying your gift hamper.

Third, the age of the child. What was a fantastic doll last year might be just too uncool if the child’s interests have changed.

Think about the individual interests of the child. Some kids really love themed gift baskets and if you have a girl who likes tennis or a boy who wants to go fishing, you can not go wrong when you focus on a theme.

It is all about what the child likes more than what you would like to give them. Giving a healthy and nutritious gift hamper may be really welcomed and appreciated by a 40 year old partner, but a kid needs to be a kid and have some real wow factor in the presents they get.

There is time enough for sensible adult gifts later in life. Now is the time for fun and exciting little treats to be unwrapped with abandonment and excitement.

Sugar and spice and all things nice are not necessarily what little (or big) girls are made of.

In compiling or selecting a gift basket for girl you need to consider not only the girl’s age, but her interests and even her pet hates.

As a kid, I hated dolls – the only little girl in a street full of little boys, I found dolls to be universally despised and did not want to be associated with them.

As a kid, I loved to read, but more Lassie than Nancy Drew.

Some girls love frilly pink stuff to death, some girls will throw anything prissy on the ground and stomp on it.

Slugs and snails and puppy dogs tails; a pretty gruesome mix of what little boys are supposedly made of.  (Though done with a bit of garlic butter, snails are just delicious)

In my experience boys are curious, adventurous and eager to receive gifts that they can use up, do “stuff” with and/or tinker with to their satisfaction.

Gift basket for boys should contain some interesting little food items, some adventure filled reading matter and some toys that boys need to build or run with or figure out for themselves to give them the satisfaction they crave.

Yes, it is a lovely idea to make a Christmas cookie gift basket for kids.

Related to this, I fully endorse the idea of teaching kids the magic of cookery and the necessity of cleaning up your own messes and the joys of eating the fruits of your own labors and of making presents to give to others – especially to other kids.

However…

Making a Christmas cookie gift basket as a gift basket for kids has a couple of drawbacks for me.

I am very busy at Christmas and totally strapped for time, so looking for really good shortcuts.

I am hot and flustered in the kitchen at this time of year (Think tropical Australian heat)

I don’t want to cook extra things with anyone or for anyone under pressure – that’s when I’ll really mess everything up and my family will go into “duck and cover” survival mode for days.

I prefer to buy a Christmas cookies gift basket that has a variety of cookies in it, rather than being superwoman coming home from work and sifting out 3-4 different recipes for inclusion in a homemade gift basket.

Is the child male or female (and how will the other children in the family react – do they need to get a gift at the same time?)

How old is the child?

What are their real interests, not what you or some other adult thinks they should be interested in.

What’s “big” with kids at the moment.

How “impressive” or expensive do you want your gift to look and really be?

These used to be called kids Christmas stockings and they got hung in front of the fireplace and were filled with all sorts of toys and reading matter and edible bits and pieces.

Christmas gift baskets for kids are an evolving form, depending on the age and interests of the child or children involved.

If you want to give a communal type family-wide gift basket for kids, then you need to be sure that either the kids can share or they can negotiate – and that could be a good character building exercise for the kids involved.

Or it could just be another potential headache for the adults trying to keep peace and calm on Christmas day.

Individual Christmas gift baskets for kids need to be constructed or bought with a mindfulness of not just what is fashionable for kids at the moment, but what the child getting the gift really really likes and appreciates.

Why buy fruit baskets for kids?

Is it because the kids in question LOVE fruit? Or is it because they are allergic to or not allowed by parents to have sugary and fatty treats that you would normally associate as fun food for kids?

You might have another reason, but you do need to consider – Are the kids you are buying for going to appreciate your fruit baskets for kids?

The main point about gift giving, especially with gifts for kids, is that the recipient appreciates and enjoys not only the gesture but the stuff they get.
